University of Oregon - SOJC Hall of Achievement Tributes

Each year, Blue Couch has the honor of working with the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication department to produce three tribute videos to commemorate the lifetime achievements of alumni. The past honorees for this award have included the likes of Ann Curry and Dan Wieden as well as many others extraordinary in their field.

This year, the award went to Glenn Cole '92, Steve O'Leary '69, and Ann Sullivan '42.

Glenn Cole received the inaugural Eric Allen Award for alumni under 40. Cole co-founded 72andSunny, a design and advertising company, after working as Creative Director at the advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy in Amsterdam. Eric Allen was the first dean of the School of Journalism.

Steve O'Leary is president of O'Leary and Partners Advertising and is a noted author and speaker about word-of-mouth advertising.

The late Ann Sullivan was a pioneer for women in journalism as one of the longest tenured reporters for The Oregonian.

The Hall of Achievement - the school's signature event - started in 1998 when members of the school's Journalism Advancement Council wanted to celebrate the history of the school and connect students with that history and with alumni.

This is an amazing tribute for each person that has been rightfully honored for their contributions to the field of Journalism and Communications. Blue Couch loves being a part of documenting each honoree and appreciates the inspiration we in turn receive every year in doing so.

It explains the reasoning and details behind such a massive and crucial undertaking for the school's campus. It involved multiple interviews with the University President Richard Laviviere, various alumni, current students, faculty and state legislation to create this comprehensive piece.

The LLS gave us a call and asked if we could feature one of their young Luekemia cancer survivors as part of an educational piece going out to schools in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Of course, we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of such a worthwhile cause. This is the first part of what should be subsequent chapters in the years ahead as part of LLS's efforts to educate others.

Fox Pomona Theater - The Living Fox Documentary

Well, here is something that doesn't happen everyday! A little while ago, a company in Spain called us to see if we would be able to shoot a commercial and perform chroma "green-screen" taping for broadcast and web usage, starring the Portland Trailblazers rookie sensation Rudy Fernandez (also, a major star and Olympian in Spain). They also wanted to animate a character later into the commercial, so this one involved also getting HDR images to "mirror" the lighting environment we were shooting in.

After telling a Spanish/English translator we could do this for them, we did not hear from them again for a few more weeks. Then, with just ONE day's notice, they called back and told us they needed to get this shot the very next day!

So, we pulled off a production miracle, and with the amazing (and last-minute) help from Kyle Christman (boom operator/HDR Image consultation), David Barss (still photography), Eugene den Daas (green-screen drop & lighting setup), and Krissa Swan (production assistant and animated character stand-in), Greg James was able to produce, direct, and shoot all of what they needed in less than 3 hours of actual production time!

Because we had to work through a translator to get and deliver all the necessary information to Rudy and the folks back in Spain, it made for a bit of a challenge. But, we have to say Rudy was a champ and extremely gracious to work with. Also, Club Sports in Tigard, OR (the location where we shot) was great to work with as well.

As soon as we hear that the commercial is finished (it is being edited in Spain), we'll let everyone know. But for now, here is a fun slideshow provided by David Barss to check out.

Our Website Gets Featured in .NET Magazine

In less than one month after posting the Phase 1 of our new site online, we (previously Celsol Productions) were interviewed for a featured gallery in .NET Magazine. Based out of the UK, they are the world's No.1 magazine for web designers and developers. We appreciate the recognition and are very happy to have received this and other great feedback on our site. Flashloaded.com gave us 2nd place for site of the month. An honor we got after creating our first site many years ago. Plus, we have received a few other great web awards and recognition from our peers, like the overwhelming amount of votes on E-creative.net.

We hope to soon have other great designs rewarded such as ours has for our clients and we will continue to do our best for each and every one of you. To see our latest web designs click the monitor on the desk in our office.

Greg's main focus is on all things film and video. He uses his many years of nationally acclaimed experience in the independent film industry to create his commercial work.

Since earning the distinction of producing one of the Top 25 cult-independent films of all-time, as seen on “Roger Ebert & The Movies” in 1994, Greg has gone on to write, shoot, direct, and produce multiple feature and short films. He has also acted in many productions, which provides a unique perspective when working with other actors.

After serving as a Project Manager at Nike for over 7 years, Greg went on his own and later joined forces with his two cousins, Jason and Kyle, to make up Blue Couch Media.

Greg also heads Solstice Video Productions, a division of Blue Couch Media, which primarily focuses on award-winning wedding and event documentaries.

When not at work, Greg enjoys spending as much time as he can with his wife Kacey and son Brady, the loves of his life.

Kyle Christman, Animation Director

Kyle has a fascination for all things art, digital and traditional alike. His artist background includes an Art/Multimedia degree from Southern Oregon University.

Along with Kyle's knowledge of Flash animation, 3D modeling, After Effects and Photoshop, he is also extremely adept with illustration, concept and figure drawing. Right now, Alberto Ruiz is one of his favorite artists.

Kyle currently owns a partial M.F.A. in Illustration from the Academy of Art University San Fransisco. His hobbies also include industrial design, architectural rendering, and sculpture.

Jason W. Christman, Creative Director

Jason started his career as a photography major and became very experienced in film, lighting, camera repair and photo retouching. But his niche in photography was darkroom manipulation, blending negatives and creating scenes never imagined or possible with standard photography. Once the application Adobe Photoshop became available in the early 90's, his life changed as he recognized the possibilities and future this software held and how it could take him out of the darkroom and down a whole new career path.

Jason began working for Light Works Productions in 1994 as a digital designer in the early years of computer graphics and began advertising and marketing projects under the instruction of his mentor Richard McLean.

In 1998, he began his lifelong dream of becoming an entrepreneur by started his own design company Celestial, Inc. Over the next 7 years, while developing his design business, Jason nurtured his love for art, music and travel by opening a Celtic Gallery and Folk Music store in his live/work studio in The Pomona Arts Colony.

After falling in love with his newly found family Jenny and Kaileigh, he relocated everything to Portland, Oregon, where he was originally born, and expanded his business with his brother Kyle and cousin Greg. Today the business is stronger than ever, and as of this year, celebrates its first decade of success!
